Can you pre-sign the documents before meeting with us?
Yes and no, it depends on the type of Notarization requested.
In California, we usually have two different types of Notarizations that we can perform. One of them is an Acknowledgment, and the other is a Jurat. The Acknowledgment is to verify the identity of one's signature on a given document and acknowledge that the person did indeed personally appear before the Notary. The Jurat, on the other hand, not only certifies the person's identity as valid and having appeared in front of the Notary but also that they have made a sworn statement (given by the Notary) in person with regards to the document/statement in question. There is a slight distinction here between the two types of Notarization in that the Jurat requires personal appearance at the time of signing because of an affirmation before signing. The Acknowledgment does also require a unique appearance. However, it does not require that the Notary visually be there to see that the signatory has signed the document in person.
Now you might be asking, does this mean you can do the Notarizations remotely if you can see my ID? It does not, unfortunately. Since both types of Notarization require personal appearance and needing to sign/thumbprint the public record (aka Notary journal), the requirement to appear in person is an absolute must in the State of California.
